About Us

Name: Historical Society of Liberia (HSL)

Founded in August, 6, 2021, the Historical Society of Liberia (HSL) was formed on the principle of preserving and promoting the history of Liberia - Africa’s oldest republic

Our Motto

Know and Preserve: HSL believes that it can successfully contribute to Liberian history by understanding the events and ideas of the past. The foundation of that understanding is historical inquiry

Our Mission

The overarching vision of the Historical Society of Liberia (HSL) is to preserve Liberian history. The (HSL) aims to preserve Liberian history through the following principle areas:

(a) Serve as the central hub for the provision of research resources
(b) Promote Liberian history in schools, universities, and other educational institutions
(c) Make Liberian history more accessible to the public
(d) Join the national voice mediating historical matters

Members and Founding Members

There is no “initiation ceremony” for this Society. For now, the membership criterion is regular participation in HSL’s activities, e.g., via responses/comments to the online discussion. Accordingly, while there are more than 20 names on our email list, we have included those that have met this requirement: They are HSL’s Founding Members. In addition, a number of persons have inquired about membership. We will include their names (and others on the mailing list) once they contribute to HSL as indicated above.
